OUR HISTORY

Early Beginnings

In January of 1942, the first meeting of the Longmont Church of Christ took place in the home of one of the members. World War II was raging and the local sugar beet harvest was considered crucial to the war efforts. At the time, Longmont had a population of 7500. Worship continued to be held each Sunday in various members’ homes. In November of 1945, a small building located at 309 Collyer Street was purchased from the American Legion organization for $1200.

The floors were hardwood, and the entrance vestibule had an area for coats and hats. The seats wereOld Building wooden fold down theater style seats. The basement had three classrooms and a furnace room. Air conditioning consisted of opening the side windows so that a breeze could enter. The baptistery was manufactured from sheets of metal that had been welded together and placed under a trap door beneath the podium. A garden hose was attached to the sink in the basement, and then ran along the stairs to the main floor. Water for a baptism was changed once a month in the winter and only filled in the summer as needed.

Additional classrooms and a fellowship area was added in 1971. By 1996, the building was completely renovated and additional foyer space was added.
